you're probably wondering(well probably not...) how is it that theres a solid south swell with epic conditions and the only photos i have to post are of waves that are 1 foot. well....i dont get to shoot very often plain and simple, when my good buddy JOEY HAJNAL had a day off when the sun was finally out it was 1 foot all the way down to santa cruz. dont worry though i got plenty of waves during the south that if i had pictures of i wouldn't even be allowed to show anyone anyway.....

i read somewhere that people that live in places that are foggy, grey, and overcast frequently are more likely to be depressed. i dont think im depressed but fuck this weather is depressing. its just dark....all the time. sucks.

the drink of the week is a diplo and tiesto collaboration, i've listened to this song so many times already and at first i thought diplo and tiesto? thats fuckin weird. that being said, this is a deadly combo: tiesto on the buildups and breakdowns and diplo making the drops=a really sick song.

well that wave is pretty weird. Myself, TRAVIS PAYNE, and ALEX GRAY got out there first. grabbed our boards and paddled over with MIKE SCHLEBACH. it was super high tide and the wave was lurching and windy. i paddled for one wave that i thought was a bomb but when i stood up it kind of flattened out and i was over on the shoulder somehow. the picture actually shows what happened pretty well, the first pic im the guy paddling deep on the yellow board, looked like a sick one to me too hah.

pretty much a shoulder but it was my first wave at todos and TRAVIS told me to paddle for it.. so i did.

i have been reluctant to update this blog after the mavs contest. i knew thats what i had to talk about but the truth is i cant find words, pictures, videos, or other peoples words to describe how epic and gnarly this past swell was. to set the record straight there HAVE been bigger days at mavs ridden. BUT this is the biggest mavericks anyone has successfully paddled into... fuck its the biggest waves people have paddled into EVER. I only got one wave saturday after the contest, wound up breaking my leash thank god big cousin TRAV PAYNE was there to pick me up on the ski right quick. I fared better the next day, but i only got ONE WAVE, and that what sets the elite guys from the rest of us.... they just kept coming back for more...... i had one goal once we FINALLY got out to the bowl and that was get ONE REAL WAVE. easier said than done... i reached my quota, bowed out and sat and watched from the shoulder. the guys who got bombs this weekend and then went back for more...... thats un fuckin believable and those guys are mental....

mavericks was about as good as it gets on thanksgiving, really nice and clean kinda tough to find the ramps in but a challenge always makes things interesting. anyway heres what i have successfully pilfered off the internet. mostly frame grabs, screen shots, and a few photos off facebook. thanks to the boys at POWERLINES, always providing awesome HD video of swells and the usual suspects on ski's gettin the shot: FRANK Q, SETH MIGDAIL, among others... and who says i dont give photo credit...

also POWERLINES had a little screening last night at la costanera(the old charthouse in montara) it was pretty cool, only november and they already have some insane clips. shoots to curt, eric, and chris for killing it on covering the swell from all angles.

to be honest it wasnt even that crowded and paddling out i even sat down to tell myself to be a dick and take off on everything, works for nathan fletcher. i got five waves one or two big ones i think ill wait til i see the photographic evidence before i claim i got a bomb. i airdropped one from the lip to the bottom of the wave it was pretty brutal, broke my leash had to get my board in the lagoon. im mostly blaming that kook ramon navarro for that incident. the guy is on my shoulder and just tried paddle right in front of me trying to take my line, cut me three strokes short cause he cut into me so hard, got to my feet and got hung up so brutally. anyway, fuck that guy cant wait to see the shot, not looking forward to that fag being in the shot though.

well another event has passed and it was a pretty good one, although im biased since i did horrible especially compared to last years event in which i won all three divisions i was entered in. this year i lost first heat in juniors(pathetic on my part you dont need to remind me) made the mens final and got third and got third in a four man pro am semi; missed the pro am final by tenths of a point but thats my kinda luck. anyway my beloved cousin TYLER PAYNE won the pro eight hundred cash and a super gay oakley watch supposedly worth thirteen hundred bucks. im stoked the title remained in the family though. heres some shots from the event, they were taken by FRANK QUIRATE and SETH MIGDAIL. both guys are mavs photographer royalty and decided to take a break from shooting at mavs or thinking about mavs to shoot rockaway which beat the fuck out of us as closely to mavs as it could. did i just say mavs enough for you?

anyone who lives and surfs in northern california understands this dilemma. it was real nice sunny warm and offshore earlier this week and yet the surf was average at best everywhere. i got a decent session monday morning, met up with santa cruz photographer cory hansen and TIMMY REYES and took em both for a little OCEAN BEACH excursion. it was solid double overhead i didnt get any barrels but they were out there. i wound up breaking a leash tie and had to swim all the way in on my second or third wave; sucked. shot next day with aspiring photog JOEY HAJNAL heres the shots. pretty lame i mean it was one foot and mushy. sorryyyy.

just got out of the water at mavs pretty much flat. got up at dark drove down there hung out until it was light enough to go out. got one sleigh ride paddled back out and sat on my ass for probably close to two hours without a single wave coming through. during that time the sun came out and so did the crowd. some prick on a longboard, ya a fucking longboard; i know right what a douchebag, snaked the shit out of me on a nugget. i finally got a good one got dropped by a bunch of people but thats mavericks for you.

i got some clips yesterday put together a quick little flick for you to enjoy. dont judge based on this surf sucks and i swear to g i only film when the surf is utter dog shit.

i realized im too lazy to update this blog with my daily life or even weekly life. so anyway this whats been going since i last posted. october 17 went to TREASURE ISLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL, that shit was ridick. sooo fun. MSTRKRFT and MGMT were fucking incredible, we missed PASSION PIT :( and THE STREETS were only half decent while BRAZILIAN GIRLS was just utter crap. me(right) and my buddy jason pirolo(left) watching MGMT.

so im supposed to be a surfer still right? i know seems like all i do is party... HAH HAH HAH, sorry couldnt resist, the MSTRKRFT illness is still fresh in my system. anyway i surfed the pier with travis and brian last thursday, it was like solid ten foot faces and super gnar, im shocked no one broke a board. the shot below is from that day. the fog rolled in and the guy shooting bailed and i wound up getting a pretty noteworthy barrel.. i was excited at least.

which brings us toooooo yesterday. wow im getting pretty current here huh. holy shit no one is still reading this there is no way in hell. anyway i hate the jetty but for some reason i had a great session yesterday, wound up getting a solid like four or five second barrel, fuck im claiming so hard right now. heres some pictures from yesterday. i dig the layback shot, the airs are all flyaways... shocker i know.

havent uploaded anything in a while. i've been extremely busy doing absolutely nothing. well i've been studying and reading for class i made a pact with myself to try and match my grades to my intelligence this semester i owe it to myself. anyway LOVE FEST was fucking ridiculous. so much fun. i wound up with some kids drivers license, i'd keep it and use it as a fake but the kids a year younger so im mailing it back to him; i know im such the good samaritan.

last night i attended the get up kids reunion concert at the fillmore. such a good show. the opening acts were dog shit but TGUK killed. so glad they're back together i hope they put out some new music cause they're really sick. if you surf you've definitely heard them in older taylor steele movies, if you dont surf and you dont know who they are... well what the fuck are you doing with your life? heres some tracks that are pretty sweet. unfortunately the list of songs to choose from off of Hype Machine is limited. look them up though they're really sick and put on a killer show.

i really like this wave. it holds when its bigger, sometimes it barrels, and the current is so brutal that people can barely surf it. the last part is my favorite. lately though, there has been a lot of beginners and just complete idiots surfing the place. i think the problem is its so easy to paddle out people dont even realize they're in over their heads until they ran me or someone else over. whatever i guess its like my what my dad always told me when i played baseball; you cant control everything going on around you, all you can control is YOU. the great steve dwyer everyone. heres a few from friday september 18th.
